DOCENT (Tourguide training)

Free training classes for men and women interested in becoming USS Midway Museum volunteer docents are scheduled to begin Saturday, November 1, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on board the ship berthed at Navy Pier near downtown San Diego. There will be six weekly classes in the series along with personalized on-the-job training after which the candidates will be qualified to lead museum guests on tours of the ship and make presentations to them about life aboard Midway – America’s longest-serving aircraft carrier. Applications must be submitted in advance.
No military experience is required. Women and civilians are encouraged to apply. However, candidates must be at least 18 years of age and be able to climb the ship’s ladders and stairs. Each volunteer shift is four hours long and docents will be asked to volunteer roughly 20 or more hours per month once training is completed.
The classes include training in naval customs and procedures, interpersonal skills, guest relations, the crew’s and officers operation of the USS Midway, the layout of the ship, and more.

The USS Midway Museum opened in June, 2004 and has become one of San Diego’s most popular visitor attractions with more than 700,000 guests coming aboard each year. The ship was commissioned in September, 1945 and served for 47 years including the Vietnam War and Operation Desert Storm in the Persian Gulf. Nearly 250,000 men served their country aboard the Midway before it was retired in 1992.
