Community Profile: College AreaThe College Area Community is located in the central part of the City of San Diego, along the southern rim of Mission Valley and approximately eight miles northeast of the downtown area. It is a residential community, which is also home to San Diego State University. The College Area Community developed slowly during the early 1930s. The first subdivision maps occurred along El Cajon Boulevard and along Adams Avenue in the vicinity of 55th Street, in the vicinity of 63rd and Stewart Streets and along Cresita Drive, Lindo Paseo and Hardy Avenue. In 1931, the State Teachers College, (later San Diego State University), relocated in the College Area from its former Normal Street location. El Cajon Boulevard is a historic commercial district through the college area community and was once the primary transportation route from San Diego to El Cajon and Arizona, before the construction of Interstate 8. The postwar desire for suburban living and the completion of Interstate 8 in the late 1950's further contributed to the growth of the community and University, but contributed to the loss of commercial businesses which relocated to Mission Valley. Redevelopment of SDSU and University controlled property, beginning in the 1990's, caused intensification of uses in the community near the campus, which is ongoing and includes the extension of the San Diego Trolley through the community with two stations: one on campus at SDSU and one opposite Alvarado Hospital on Alvarado Road. A second redevelopment project is currently proposed, which would redevelop the commercial core along El Cajon Boulevard. Community Profile: Eastern AreaEl Cerrito Heights, Rolando, Rolando Park, Darnall, Oak Park and Webster are neighborhoods that make up the Eastern Area. El Cerrito Heights is a hilly neighborhood that predominantly contains single-family homes with some multi-family development along El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue, which are the main East-West corridors in the Eastern Area. The rolling hills of Rolando and Rolando Park are among the more recently developed neighborhoods of Mid-City, with Rolando developing prior to World War II and Roland Park in the mid-1950s. Both are predominantly single-family homes along curving streets, with some multi-family near the strip commercial development along El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue. Darnall, Oak Park and Webster are neighborhoods that are predominantly single-family homes, but also include large multi-family complexes and a mobile home park both in Oak Park and in Webster. Oak Park is home to Chollas Lake Park. More information The College Area is a neighborhood of the Mid-City region of San Diego, California. The College Area is dominated by the presence of San Diego State University (SDSU), which was formerly San Diego State College and previous to that San Diego State Teachers College, which the area is still named after. The College Area is in the mid-city, and has many new stores and restaurants, as well as many canyons. There is also an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in the area near Congregation Beth Jacob Orthodox Temple on College Avenue. The college area lies on a plateau which overlooks Interstate 8. The neighborhood's borders are defined by Fairmount Avenue, Montezuma Road, Collwood Boulevard to the Southwest, Interstate 8 to the North, 70th Street, Keeney Street to the East, and El Cajon Boulevard to the South. MTS (Metropolitan Transit System) operates the San Diego Trolley[1] to SDSU and Alvarado Medical Center, both of which are in the College Area. The trolley station at SDSU, as well as a bus plaza, make up the SDSU Transit Center. Bus routes 11, 11A, 14, 936, 115 go to the Transit Center, to name a few. Transfers are made from the SDSU trolley subway station located at the Transit Center, underneath the bus plaza. Riders can go up to the bus plaza via elevator or stairs. Congested traffic is a consistent nuisance on College Avenue, a main street in the area. During the school year at SDSU, freeway ramps are heavily backed up. Since the July 2005 connection of the San Diego Trolley to the SDSU on-campus underground station, congestion has subsided only marginally. The Interstate 8 freeway that runs past the area to the north often gets congested during the week because of students and commuters. |
