The Navajo community, encompassing approximately 14 square
miles, lies roughly north of Interstate 8, northwest of the city
of La Mesa, west of the cities of El Cajon and Santee, and
southeast of the San Diego River. The community includes the
neighborhoods of Grantville, Allied Gardens, Del Cerro, and San
Carlos. The planning history of the Navajo community began in 1887, when the Junipero Land and Water Company developed plans for a town with a post office registration called Orchard. The area, located along present-day Mission Gorge Road north of Interstate 8, became known as Grantville in honor of President U.S. Grant. Between 1948 and 1954, a number of tracts were annexed to the City of San Diego totaling more than 6,600 acres. The San Carlos and Del Cerro communities were ultimately developed within these annexation areas. Today, the community enjoys its situation among some prominent and attractive geographic features, including the San Diego River and Lake Murray, Cowles Mountain, and Mission Gorge areas of Mission Trails Regional Park. A wide variety of land uses are represented in the western
portion of the Navajo community, including detached and attached
residential in Allied Gardens, and some significant commercial
and light industrial centers in Grantville, situated along both
sides of Mission Gorge Road. The central and eastern portions of
Navajo are primarily residential in character in the Del Cerro
and San Carlos neighborhoods. Pockets of neighborhood and
community-serving commercial are situated at the intersections
of major transportation corridors, such as Navajo Road at the
intersections of Jackson Drive and Lake Murray Boulevard.Allied Gardens Allied Gardens is a community in the eastern part of San Diego, California. It neighbors San Carlos and Del Cerro to the east and north respectively, and College Area and Grantville to the southeast and southwest. Greenbrier Ave. is home to the Allied Gardens Recreation Center and Allied Gardens Pool (next to Lewis Middle School) and further down the hill, just off Greenbrier on Estrella, are the community Little League fields. It has a small business district located on Waring road between Orcutt and Zion, where it becomes Grantville. The abundance of parks and schools in the community has resulted in a very family-friendly reputation. Allied Gardens was developed by Louis L. Kelton and Walter Bollenbacher in 1955. They purchased the 1,000 acres (4 km²) from the Waring estate. Their original business name was the Allied Contractors, hence the name. Del Cerro Del Cerro (Spanish for "of the hill") is a neighborhood with a small selection of high end homes in the eastern part of San Diego, California, USA and the Navajo community. It includes a few sub-communities such as Del Cerro Highlands, Princess Del Cerro, and Olde Del Cerro. It neighbors the communities of San Carlos, Allied Gardens, College Area, Grantville Lake Murray and the city of La Mesa. Del Cerro began as an affordable housing project with the secondary purpose to develop eastern San Diego, securing a primary transportation path to San Diego proper. Del Cerro developed with surrounding communities into a diverse cultural center. During the 1960's and 1970's many Jews living in San Diego proper decided to migrate toward the Del Cerro area. Many residents of Del Cerro enjoy lush views from the hill that extend as far as the Coronado Islands. Del Cerro Blvd. contains the community's only commercial area including Windmill Farms, a Chevron station, two liquor stores, a Mexican restaurant named Mi Guadalajara, a coffee shop, and a day spa and a corner store. Windmill Farms provides a portion of the community with groceries including organic foods and competes with near-by full selection grocery store Albertsons in Allied Gardens and Keil's in San Carlos. Soon after, the land was purchased and the recreation facility was built on it. Facilities: Outdoor basketball courts, lighted softball fields, picnic tables, a children's play area, a gymnasium, auditorium, swimming pool and a community building with rooms available for rent.
